Hi Guys, Once again I am still trying to find someone who was on the train going from Dulag Luft to Stalag Luft 1 and spent New Years in the marshalling yards in Berlin sweating out the English bombing of Berlin. They didn't bomb and boy were we lucky. Sgt Hellman are you or any of yours still around? Remember how we collected cigarettes and gum and gave them to the guards so they could get some beer for the guys that wanted a drink to celebrate New Years. I will never forget you telling me, when the guards were out of sight that you were talking Jewish to the guards because you were Jewish and if they found out you would probably get shot. They later found out about your being Jewish and in Feb 1945 you were taken from your room in North 3 and transferred to the Jewish barracks in the south compound. If you are still around God Bless You. How about they other guys on the train How many of you are still around? There were approximately 200 guys stuffed into two trains.

We lost two of our crew in a make-up crew, but I made it back OK. Like you, I hope for no more. B Teater

William (Bud) Willson was my managing editor on the Wilmington Star-News during the late 1950s. Although I recently learned that he is deceased, I would like to hear from any of his surviving crew members. Bud was a very intelligent and humble person. He taught me things about journalism you don't get in school. Our other bond was I am an aircraft owner and pilot. However, I did my stint as a USAF ground pounder in Korea (1953-54)at Kimpo, and as OIC of Radio Troubador while TDY with the X Army Corps. Back to Bud, I remember his comment about the motion picture "Stalag 17." He said, "It wasn't like that!"
One final comment: Here, in Winston-Salem NC, we have J.R. (Bob) Regan, T/Sgt with the 447th BG, and who was in Stalag XVII-B.

I was initially searching for photos of WWII POW camps. I came to your site and discovered from my relatives that LT E.W. Allen (grandfather) was held in that camp. He was a B-24 Liberator pilot. I am not sure of the date he arrived, but he was there until the end with the Russians and the repatriation. He is still living, but not in good shape. He talks frequently of his military career, the day he was shot down, his evasion and eventual capture, and the day the Russians arrive. I have never heard him speak of the camp or his time there. I do not want to push him, but being a military pilot myself, I would like to learn more. I was very glad to find your site. I could not find his name listed on the roster. If anyone has any info feel free to write or email me.

Hi there, my father was in Stalag Luft 3 and one other. He was infantry, forward artillery spoter and was caaptured in N. Africa by Rommel's boys. For some reason (Goring must have missed he was infantry, jk...) he was put with the fly-guys. He didn't argue cause the flyers were treated a tad beeter than most. Anyway, he's still alive and 84. If you knew him or have any info. drop me a note. Thanks

I had the previledge and honor of serving with Col Zemke on his final assignment as Commander of the Reno Air Defense Sector at Stead AFB, Nv, 1964-1966. He called me into his office one morning and threw a set of majors leaves on his desk and never said a word. I thought they were for my office mate. When he finally said they were for me. I darn near fainted. I was promoted 4 years below-the-zone. When he gave me command of the Support Group he told me I would screw it up because I would want to please everyone. We flew together in our T-33 mostly to find high quality walnut wood for the spectacular gun stocks he made in his garage. He took me with him to Edwards AFB to meet his old friends in the F-12/SR-71 flight test program. He took me on his last farewell trip around the US to see his old fellow fighter aces, Gerry Johnson at Bunker Hill AFB, Gabby Gabreski at Siskiu County Apt, Long Island, NY, a few others along the way. He told me about going to the reunions of the world's top fighter aces facing his former German fighter pilot adversaries. He told me about the time Gen Curt Lemay fired him as Commander of the U-2 squadron. He told me about the time he nearly got fired for going to the press after his plea for spare parts for his fighter wing in Germany went unanswered by his commander. Yes, I admired and respected him for his military career and as a great human being.

Up to 30 days pays $150 per month, up to 120 days it pays $300 per month and over 360 days $450 per month. The bill number is HR 850 . Contact your congressmen and get them to back the bill. These are monthly benefits and do not count as income. The bill was reintroduced to make benefits available to new POWs so there is no waiting period. This was done to make monthly benefits

My father was Medical Officer in Luft 1 for 2 years. He is now dead but used to boast that he was the only POW to return from the war with 5 German girls as prizes! They were the camp censors and he had been hiding them in the revier, using them as nurses. Does anyone remember a British officer begging to be allowed aboard their B-17 with 5 girls? They arrived safely in England, avoiding the Russian danger, and eventually home to Germany. I remember as a child on holiday visiting a german farm and wondering why a very old woman was kissing my father`s knees, thanking him for something to do with rescuing her granddaughter. I would be interested in hearing from anyone with more information.

He spent approx 7 months as a POW there except for a couple of months when he was taken to the woods with 1/2 dozen other POW's to chop wood and he drove an axe through his foot and spent the next 4-6 weeks in a german clinic. Is the stalag IIB just a misprint? There is a prisoner # on it. Are there records of these numbers?

As a young 2nd Lt in the USAF in 1951, I was admitted to the Base Hospital at Lowry AFB, Colorado for surgery. My roommate in the hospital was Major John C. Morgan. Shortly after we were discharged from the hospital, John and I met for lunch at the Officer's Club. As we approached the club, we were met by Brig. General Caldwell, the Base Commander. I was surprised when the General saluted John. I was about to ask John why when I noted the ribbon on John's uniform indicating that he had been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. One of the privileges of that award is that the recipient is entitled to a salute from all other service members, regardless of their rank. When I found that John was reluctant to share the basis for the medal, I found out from some library research the reason for it. John was a warm, personable man, and I was honored to have known such a genuine hero.

I knew Phern Stout in his later years. All this information you collected about the crew is very interesting. A man in Switzerland, John Meurs, is wanting this information to write a book about the 35 bombers that were lost on this mission. His e-mail address is meurs.john@bluewin.ch He contacted our local library about information about Phern. Send me your e-mail address and I will copy the letter in an e-mail to you.

Dear Mr. Woods:

When we entered WWII my father, Joseph Rondone, was 27, married with one child (me). He was an aviation enthusiast with many hours of flight time in his old Waco that he and a friend had rebuilt from a wreck. He volunteered to be a primary flight instructor for the Army Air force giving flight training to cadets through their solo flight, and later a ferry command pilot eventually cetified for every warbird we produced. He was very proud of the fact that not one of the young men he trained died in a accident before reaching combat, like so many others rushed through training during that critical time. There's a lot more I'd like to say about him, but I'll wrap it up with this: he was a good man and good father.

God bless you and all the others who fought for us.

Sam

He doesn't remember much about the guys he was in with or excatly what barracks he was in. He does remember that "Gabby" was the commanding officer, hopefully someone will recognize this information and fill in some blanks for him. He was shot through the throat before he was captured and this prevented him talking much. He tells me that he use to whisper. If anyone remembers anything about him we would appreciate knowing.

I was a bombardier, 401st Squadron, 91st Group, 8th Air Force, shot down 12/5/43 near Duren. Crash landed in a beet field, captured 5 days later with 2 others from my crew near Aachen. Interrogated in Frankfurt, then shipped to Stalag Luft 1. Like Lt. Kutsow, who I don't believe I ever met, I'm Jewish and was also seperated from my crew and the other Pows and sent to the segregated barracks in the North Compound. My memories of what transpired are somewhat different than Lt. Kutsow's. Perhaps one day we can exchange reminiscences.
