OUR FATHER, JOHN WILLIAM EVANS (PUCK) WAS A POW AFTER PARACHUTING FROM HIS LANCASTER ON A MISSION OVER GERMANY ON NOVEMBER 3/4, 1943. DAD WAS AN AUSTRALIAN, FLYING IN SQUADRON 467. UNFORTUNATELY, OR MAYBE UNDERSTANDABLY, DAD NEVER SPOKE IN DETAIL OF HIS DAYS AS A POW, AND AS, AT THAT TIME, WE WERE TOO INVOLVED IN OUR OWN LIVES, MY BROTHER RICHARD AND MYSELF NEVER REALLY QUESTIONED HIM IN DEPTH ABOUT IT. I'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE WHO NEW DAD AND HAS ANY MEMORIES OF THAT TIME TO SHARE. DAD PASSED AWAY IN 1978 AND WE REGRET NEVER HAVING SHARED HIS EXPERIENCES WITH HIM. BRONWYN & RICHARD EVANS

Recently while moving my mother into assisted living,(my dad died in 1983) my siblings and I began cleaning out her house. I came across the book, Behind Barbed Wire, by Morris J. Roy. I was fascinated by the book and even more shocked to see my dad's name in the listing under North Compound II (Pennsylvania, Sullivan,J.M.Lt;B;B-17, 4418 Lancaster Ave, Philadelphia)After a google search for MorrisJ.Roy, I stumbled onto your web site. I must say it is impressive. My siblings and I grew up as military "brats" as our dad went back into the Air Force sometime around 1947. We were more aware of his life in the POW camp because of his career, yet he seldom spoke of his WWII experiences. We do have a log of his captivity and it is something I love reading whenever I can. A highlight of the log is his description of his last mission. I read with interest your father's description of his last mission. I am impressed with the amount of information you uncovered about his crew on the 29th mission. My brother recently made contact with a former crewman on my dad's ill-fated B-17 and relayed the conversation to me about a year ago of the last mission. With time, I hope to research more of the experiences of "All the Fine Young Men," including my father. One thing of curiosity, I failed to see J.M.Sullivan's name in the listings by barracks. I can only assume that the list is only partly accurate given the size of the population of POW's and the movement within the camp of many of them. If this message is read by anyone who may know the location of his barracks or room, please let me know. Gene Sullivan

To Roger Von Zemke: I was a POW in Stalag Luft One when Hub Zemke was Senior Allied Officer. I and 9,000 other kriegie owe a lot to your namesake. His skill in dealing with our German captors and later the Russians did much to improve conditions and get us out of there and home! I met him at an Eighth Air Force meeting in Las Vegas, where he was a featured speaker. When he learned that I was a fellow kriegie, he spent fifteen minutes recalling with me what we went through. I'm rereading his two books and am more impressed with him as a leader than ever. Regards, Bruce Bockstanz

I have details of his crew members and some treasured old photos. He survived the war but died from Alzheimers in 1988. Hi there Beeing a Swede i dont have any relatives that i know took a part in the war, exept for guard duties in the Swedish army. I just want to say, that the effort that was made by the Allied comrades to fight of the Nazi´s is not forgotten even by countries and generations that didn´t go to war. I for one feel a big respect for those who sacrificed so much for others, and future generations to come, what would the world have been, if the English with the commonwealht, and later on the U.S wouldn´t have stood up for democracy?! I hope those who writes and wonders of their relatives that went to war and didn´t talk about it, feels that the gratitude to their "Boys" goes through them, and where is is supposed to ! I hope this wasn´t just confusing, it´s easy to blunder up in another language.

I know it is a long shot, but I was hoping that I may be able to find someone who had served with him. He is still alive, but very old and getting in poor health. I know it would mean the world to him to hear from someone who he knew from the war. Please contact me if anyone out there has served with him or knew anyone who did. I can also be reached at jreno@msowilmington.uscg.mil Thanks

My dad passed in January 1976. He rarely talked of the war or his time as POW. My mother made a shadowbox of his insignia and I would like to send it. He was in the Stalag Luft 1 and has a patch in the shadowbox (the only reason I know about it and the way I found this site) She also put a picture of his crew in it. He was bombadier in B-17 with Square A on tail. His Pilot was an O'Hara and he is buried in Germany somewhere. Somehow this O'Hara was connected to the Dr. Pepper Plant in Dallas. My dad went to Bombadier school at Millington Naval Air Station in Memphis, TN where he met my mother in 1942. They were married in July 1945. He had a book with drawings in it about the prison camp. He said he was prisoner for 3 years so he must have been shot down early on. Don't know his plane name or number. I watch old war movies looking for his squadron (Square A) but it seems they always use the Triangle A for the planes in the movies - sometimes they slip and let something else in. His POW mug shot looks like Stalin. Don't have a copy of it. Any information would be appreciated.

Glad to see someone has worked so hard to create a rememberence to these men. My father was captured soon after arriving overseas and spent the remainder of the war in a POW camp. The one story I can remember him telling is of when the German soldiers wives would have a baby, they would say hotsy totsy another little Nazie. The Oklahoma men would reply in turn with okie dokie, another little Okie. My father was John Marion Kilcreae of Graham, OK. Would love to hear from anyone who might have known him. Johnnie

I found this site from an individual from Poland who said he got my address from this site. Since I've been getting a number of SCAM messages I thought I would check it out, I was certainly surprosed to see what is there. I still don't know who put my name and E-mail address in. Incidently, I was a POW during WWII having been captured in Tunisia, North Africa by elements of the great General Rommel. I spent 27 months as a guest of the German people and I use the term "guest" loosely. I intend to see if I can find the names of any other former POWs that may have been in Stalag III-B, where I spent most of my two years as a POW, or in Stalag VII-A or Stalag III-A. I'll sign off for now and do some more searching.

German interrogator Hans Scharff saved his life by proving that my father did not kill any civilians, as he was accused of doing. Our family met Mr. Scharff in Bakersfield, CA in 1984. What a gentleman! We are so grateful for his intervention in our father's situation so many years ago. I am trying to get information about my father's war experiences, since he would rarely talk about the war. He died in 1984.

What a surprise to find this info and photo! Even though my Dad did not like to talk about his war experiences, he did write a 50 page diary, while a POW, on the back of cigarette wrappers. I have a copy of it. (He did mention the guys and their nicknames too) While reading through it, decided to try to find more information about where he had been. I began a search on the internet and found your site right away! I think it's fantastic and will visit often. Thank you. Sincerely, Susan

Was there when war was over and Russians came. German guards left the camp and didn't shoot the POW's, as ordered. Thank goodness! Dad well remembers the Spicer Speech. I am so eager to visit the New Orleans museum next year. I have all of Dad's written accounts of his experience and plan to offer copies to the museum. They all lived through some stress that our generation can't even begin to equate. They all deserve our utmost gratitude and awe. Thank You for sharing this website.

Inquiring about British royalty infantry prisoner of war, specifically/foxhole related...possibly never returned to homeland. Did the British fight in Germany? Wondering if this prisoner of war was in Germany in WWI. It sounds so terribly elementary and silly but I had a photo in my sleep one night of a male who is Anglo, slender, hair parted to the right, wavy kind of like Ashley Wilkes actor in Gone with the Wind movie, blue eyes, light complected but not with freckled, kind of a Prince Charles frame in a suit that was tannish/light khaki green with pockets and formal suit of military long sleeves in a library or a large castle room with very large ceilings..I suspected this was the person..but I am not sure..related to a Prussian princess, late 30's to 40's ..didn't quite get the feeling he was married, slender and tall at least 5 ft 10 inches, small soft facial features, serious and quiet personality but not very approachable to commoners but not rude nor arrogant but quite intelligent and loyal, sincere person, a gentleman, no doubt. The picture was taken at Christmas 1941 at Stag Luft 1. My Uncle sent it then to my family in London. On the photo each of the crew were named....J.A.POTTER (Wallasey); A. At the request of his widow, Ginette Rozar, I am searching for information on POW James P. Rozar, gunner on a B-17 shot down and captured 13 October 1944. He remained a POW until liberated. He separated from the AAC upon return to the US, and rejoined the USAF two years later, retiring as a LtCol. Jim was born November 1922, spending his 20th birthday as a POW, and died September 2002. Jim's cremains were interred in Arlington with full military honors. His widow is "filling in the blanks" as to which outfit Jim was assigned to when shot down, and which Stalag he was initially assigned. Jim participated in and survived the "Death March". I am attempting to find any information on Jim's time as a Gunner/Mechanic on the B-17 and his POW days, including the Stalag he initially was interred in and the Stalag he was in when liberated.

We found this website and my Dad has the same picture of the crew by the plane! There was information that he had never received. He is the only one surviving crew member that he knows of. We just honored him with his medals (he had to have them replaced). I am so proud of my Dad, and what they all did for us!

I'm giving him a tape recorder for his birthday so I can preserve his thoughts and feelings for his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Thank you so much for doing this!! Carol Mahler

I'm seeking information on anyone who was in a German P.O.W. camp with Horace Rueben Summerhill, called Rueben Summerhill who was taken in north Africa and sent to a POW camp in Germany. We have his personal journal with drawings, poetry, and names of others in the camp with him. He was allowed to escape by the Russians after the Russians took over his camp, and he returned to the States, recovering at the Arlington Hotel in Hot Springs, Arkansas, with other P.O.W.s. Some information is online about him in a school project at ASMS. What we would most like to know is if Deaton, his friend who marched to camp and who escaped with him, is alive.

My Father Carl Clifton Adams, was a prisoner in a concentration camp in Germany, between 1943-1945. When he returned his mind was never the same. He had bad night mares for years. I can remember pictures of all the badly starving bodies. Later Mom had to dispose of all his papers, and pictures. He passed away in 1977 of cancer. Now I wish I had and could remember more of the information he did share with us. If there is someone still out there please let me know. I don't know where he was stationed, or what platoon. I'm not sure when he arrived home. I was born in 1949, so by the time i was able to remember all artifacts were destroyed.

My nieces' grandfather was Sgt. James Weldon Mellody tag 18178493 b. Apr. 4, 1921 d. Jul. 16, 2004 Rivenhall Base (Sta. 168), 9th Air Force, BG 327, BS 597 Engineer/Waist Gunner on B-26 Marauder 42-96121 Shot down June 24, 1944, his 27th mission (26 1/2 to be exact) This was mission 59 targeting Maisons La Fitte - Railroad Bridge Everyone made their target but the plane was downed as it 'turned out' from the target. Two of Weldon's crew escaped and the remaining 6 became POWs in Stalag Luft IV. Like most vets, he rarely talked about his war experiences and even then usually the funny stuff. Eventually he got to where he couldn't even do that without getting upset. I wouldn't be surprised if he were part of Stalag Luft IV's 'death march'. There's a nice website on Stalag Luft 4 at http://www.b24.net/pow/rose/ I've had a lot of luck looking up Weldon's POW record & missing crew/missing plane report respectively by contacting: National Archives, 8601 Adelphi Rd., College Park, Maryland 20740-6001 & email address for AFHSO Research- afhso.research@pentagon.af.mil As much personal info as possible on POW helps, dog tag # or SSN, full name, military branch and units, plane name or #, dates of services, capture, release dates, War name/arena, etc. This was the 'Greatest Generation'! My admiration is immense and I can't thank them enough.

Captured Feb. 20, 1945, over Nurnberg. Taken to SS prison, held for 2-3 days, then driven by truck to a ditch, where we were lined up, facing armed soldiers. The SS offce, who had lost an eye on the Russian front, was screaming and ranting when one of the soldiers told him this was in violation of the Geneva Convention. He had been an expatriated prisoner held in Canada. Luckily he was convincing enough, and we went sent on to the POW camp. He told us his story, and that of the SS officer before we left.

I only had a chance to read the first few paragraphs but I identify with your father not wanting to discuss his experience. Every once in awhile, my Dad would talk about it but not much. I took German in college (and we have German roots) and wanted him to quiz me; he said "When I hear German, I want to kill." Yikes! And he adored me! Very serious, scary stuff. Anyway, I'm going to come back and visit your site; it looks amazing. My Dad died of a heart attack in 1975 (at 55 years). I'm trying to find the second half of an article that was wriiten about him after the war but I'm not having any luck. I'm kind of a novice at searching the internet for this kind of info. Anyway, have to go but Good Job! Sandi

He was at p.o.w camp Stalag VlllB until the spring of 1944. he was one of the first to return home in exchange for German p.o.w.'s . On his return he had to have his right leg amputated at the knee. His # was B67864 and p.o.w.# 26933.He never really spoke much about the war when he returned . He passed away much too early , at 59 years ,in 1972.

My grandfather was a navigator in a b-24 I believe during WWII. He was shot down over Fogatt Italy in August of 1943 and spent 18 months in one of the Stalags. I found a letter that was sent to him that mentioned "Caterpillar Club" and I am excited to find out what it meant. I am putting together a Historical story of his time in war so if anyone knows him or has family that is aware of him let me know. He was in the 515th stationed in North Africa during the war. I believe he was in the 317th to if that makes sense. THANKS

I am writing a book about the experiences of American, British and Commonwealth POWs in Europe during World War II. I am very interested in the career of Captain John A. Vietor (USAAF) who was shot down over Regensburg on 25 February 1944, and sent to West Compound at Stalag Luft I (Barth). He wrote about his POW experiences in his book 'Time Out' (Aero Publishers), and I would like to use some extracts from his book. Unfortunately I have been unable to track down his publishers or members of his family (Capt. Vietor died in 1984). I would be very grateful if anyone could give me any information on John A. Vietor, especially his post-war life (career, marriage, home life etc). Many thanks, Adrian

Having visited a Memorial to a B17 in the Peak District, Derbyshire UK. today (01-07-04) On the Memorial were only 5 names, D.J. Decleene, T. Manos, F.E. Garry, M. Stravinski & H.F. Ayers, could any one shed any light as to the rest of the crew. They were all from the 398th Bomb Group. The info from a picture i saw of a photo, showed the tail had a red background with a letter W at the top, underneath was 7 No's 33?8944, the question were the Number should be, was scratched, but it looked like either 3 or 8 or 9, underneath the No's was a letter A. could anyone shed any light on the matter. Thank-You. malcolm.

I was assigned as a pilot in the 44th BG, 506th Sqd. @ Shipdam,E. Anglia, England. We were shot up by flak over Friedrichshafen on 18 March 1944 & struggled back to the Pas de Calais area where flak knocked us down. A story of course. All of crew bailed & survived. Will add more when time allows --RCH-Sr.
