Wing Commander Watkins joined the RAF in 1937, starting his career in No25(F) Squadron at RAF Hawkinge, progressing from ground crew to Airgunner/Observor on Hawker Demons. Fairly early on he transferred to Bomber Command as a Navigator and was on his fourth tour, commanding No15 Squadron at Mildenhall when, as Master Bomber on a support raid on Heinsberg in mid November, 1944, his Lancaster was shot down apparently by a German Nightfighter. The sole survivor, on fire and unable to exit the plane until it broke up, his problems didn't finish when he landed.  He passed away in June 1965.
