I am the very proud son of Mr Robert H Tank, who was a POW at Stalag Luft I, from his shoot down of 11/26/43 to his liberation by Russian forces on 05/01/45.
Dad is currently living in Menomonee Falls Wisconsin, and I wanted to drop you a line to give you a heads-up on the compound, barracks, and room number where he spent most of his time while there. He did mention that they moved around, but he lived in the following room most of his stay:

Robert H Tank
South Compound
Barracks #2
Room #2

I hope that this makes it to the appropriate personnel so my Dad's name, compound, barracks, and room number can be updated in your wonderful Stalag Luft I data base!!!!

Thank you so much for maintaining this wealth of knowledge and information!!!!

And many thanks to all the veterans who sacrificed their youth for our future, and all the priviledges we enjoy today!

Tanks-a-lot!!!

I am also looking to correspond with anyone who knows of the Donald Duck "I Wanted Wings" insignia used at Stalag Luft III.

If you are interested in telling your story, email me or send me a letter through regular post.

Thanks.

My father was a pilot in the Mighty 8th, shot down over France during a pre-Normandy bombing raid. His plane was Wabbit Twacks I think, though I may have the spelling wrong. He passed away in 1994, but told us a good bit about his experiences. I would love to hear from anyone who knew him or of him. He had a particular fondness for turnips and greens, which he acquired from a Red Cross shipment as I recall. Thanks for a great webpage! God Bless our WWII veterans and all those who died fighting fascism, both east and west.

He was one of the 10 man crew of a B-17F bomber. One of the crew members was killed in the arial attack by German fighters. The others were captured and incarcerated in Stalag Luft 17b. I am seeking any information I can find about my Dads military service or incarceration as a POW. He was in the 388 bomber group and the 563d squadron. His serial number was 38206331. The 563d was based in Knettishall airfield England. The plane he was flying that day was Sky Shy/Silver Dollar #23378 but I also think he may have flown in the B-17 called Red Darling. I'm looking for information on my late grandfather, Corporal Roy Austin Green (38 697 317) from Oklahoma. He served with the 28th Infantry "Bloody Bucket" Division during WWII, although I don't know his specific unit.

Grandpa arrived in the ETO in early Oct. 1944. Fought in the Battle of Hurtgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes, and was later captured in France on January 27, 1945. His rank at time of capture was Private First Class; I suspect the promotion to Corporal came sometime after his release on April 26, 1945.

I have no clue what camps he was held in, but I am told he was moved around quite a bit; and also that at his last camp, the Germans left during the middle of the night, sometime in April 1945. The next morning, upon realizing the guards had left, my grandpa and some of the other POWs took off walking in the direction they thought the allies would be. I'm told they walked through farmlands and sucked raw eggs for food, until they were found by friendlys and taken back for medical treatment.

I've read the guards also left Stalag Luft I during the night, but as my grandpa was a rifleman in the Infantry he probably wouldn't have been in a Luft camp. If anyone knows of any other camps that this had occurred, your help would be extremily appreciated. Thank you all for your time.

Respectfully,
Ben Green Evans

My father was Cornelius P. Gould, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (USA), and was a member of the group known as the Tuskegee Airmen (332nd Fighter Group). After his P-51 Mustang went down over Slovakia, he was captured and imprisoned in Stalag Luft I until the Russians overran that territory near the end of the war. After the war, he returned to Pittsburgh, where he met and married his wife, Phyllis, and had four children. I am the youngest of those children, and am a jazz pianist living in Cleveland, Ohio where the family moved in the mid-1950's.

Thank heaven there is now a reunited Europe with no "Iron curtain" and no dictators left.

And foremost a thank to those young men, living and lost, who went to liberate this part of the world.

I'm trying to find anyone who knew my brother that was wounded in Germany, in WW11. He was in Gen. Patton's third army. After he was shot several times in the leg he could no longer stay with his outfit. His buddies dug a trench around him so he would be safe from fire. He was later picked up by germans and taken to a p.o.w. camp. He recieved no medical attention so he took gangrene. He was rescued after V.E. day and sent home. He died after 30 days. "Ed" knew a buddy whose name was Harold Shoemaker that lived in Allentown, Pa. I would very much like to talk to him if he is still with us. Thank you for listening to my story.

Searching for info on how to replace my deceased father's lost Caterpillar Club pin, issued by Irvin UK. (And found it! through Irvin UK.)

My dad, though Australian and enlisted in the RAAF, was serving as navigator/bomb-aimer on a RAF (44 Sqdn) Lancaster (under the command of P/O Cuthbert) involved in the follow-through of the D-Day landings.

On July 18 1944, while on ops over Caen (France), an RCAF Halifax flew through the port wing of my dad's Lancaster - he was one of only two survivors, and later always wore his Caterpillar Club badge with pride.

Of course he was captured almost before he hit the ground, and spent the remainder of the war in a POW camp in Poland. His camp was liberated by the Russians as they marched on Berlin - they set the prisoners free, but took no care of them, so my dad and the others had no choice but to follows the Red Army to Berlin, leaving off the land (frozen AND scorched - many died on the way) until they could link up with Americans.

My dad returned to London at the age of 21 weighing about 6 stone (<40kg). He returned to Australia, married, had 4 kids, ran a small business in Murray Bridge, SA, and died in 1970, aged just 48.

I don't have any name of a POW, but I had found this website because I am doing a report and need to research on WWII. It was a very interesting site. Even the information I did not need for my report I found very interesting to read. There was so many facts that helped me understand more and more about this time era. I'm only 16 and in school we have been watching so many films and even outside of school I have watched films and read books that are helping me put pieces together about everything that went on during this war. I just really liked this site because it has been really hard to find stuff on the internet about certain things on the war that I have had questions about or just blanks here and there. Sorry I wrote so much, but this was a really good site! Thanks

I wonder if you know the correct vesion of these numbers? I took the number L-13569 off a

photograph back on a website I found under James Boyer. I am looking for my father and mother

who I lost in World War II. I figured my father could have been in a Nazi Camp like Stalag

because of the people who followed me in this country and Europe. Some of them are gone now.

Do you know who I can contact regarding more information on the POW NO 42901? Does this number

look correct to you?

James Boyer is the website name - and I found this identification number and a photograph that

could be my sister and I around 1943. I would like to check this number out. My sisters and I

never knew what happened to my family or how we came to the United States around 1944. The

people who brought us here did not keep us. They were bad. Some were deported in the last 10

years.

POW NO 42901

LI2469 or L-13569

Stalag 1 XC South Sask Regt Stobnitz, Germany

I am unable to find a Stobnitz, Germany?

I enjoy your website. It is very well written and produced. I have learned quite a bit from

the information on your site.

Thank you for your help.

Bernie was Bomb Aimer in Lancaster HK567 of 75 (NZ) Squadron RAF shot down over France 7th/8th August 1944. Initially hidden by an elderly French woman, they were betrayed to the Germans who promptly shot her and marched off Bernie to eventual incarceration in Barth for the rest of the war.
The Rear Gunner Sgt Jack Hayler was a relative of my wife's family, he died in the attack and his buried at St Valery en Caux, Normandy, France. My wife and I visited the grave last week.

I have tried to find this officer on your site under South Compound (as listed) without success. I am researching the Americans who joined the Royal Navy before the United States entered the war and David Van Epps served in the Fleet Air Arm before transferring to the 8th American Air Force.
Any help you could give into this officer would be much appreciated particularly a Group photo whilst in Stalag Luft 1,one of the veterans who remembered him, anything would be of enormous help to me.
Thankyou and congratulations on a wonderful web site. Your father would have been very proud of you and it is a fitting memorial to a brave man and his friends.
Thanks.

My father was in a prisoner of war camp in Germany during WW2. He and a friend, Bob Hopkins ("Hoppie"), escaped when the prisoners were being marched off, perhaps to be killed. Polish people helped them hide. They returned to the 4th Armored Division on Friday, April 13, 1945. I was born in November of 1946, so I'm grateful that he survived. He died in 1991 in a car accident. In his notes for a talk he gave, he said he felt his life was saved ten times, from bombs, artillery fire (20mm-88mm), mortars, land mines, machine gun fire, snipers' bullets, typhus, mastoids, starvation, cruel and violent German guards, and Alsatian police dogs. He felt guilty all his life for surviving when men that he led into battle did not. He had dropped out of high school in order to enlist in the Army.

On April 2 1944 I was flying as a radio operater and gunner in a B-24 bomber out
of Italy (459th Bomb Group 759th Bomb Squadron). We were shot down over
Steyre Austria. In a madly spinning dead airplane I rode the Bomber all the way
to its final resting place on the side of the snow clad Alps! Killed in the Air and
crash were the following.
Pilot (Head Shot Off) Co Pilot (Bailed out) Top Turret and Flight Engr (Blown
from his turret twice before bailing out) Nose gunner (Killed in his turret) Ball
gunner (Shot in his turret(Died of injuries) Right waist gunner (Shot and died
from injuries in the crash) Tail Gunner badly wounded lived through the crash.
Navigator Wounded and died as a result of the crash. Radio Operator The
Writer) shot and badly wounded lived through the crash Five lived and five
died..The aircrafts name was Deadmans Hand...a white boney hand holding five
aces. After many months without proper medical treatment (In two Labor Camps)
the tail gunner and myself ended up as cripples on sticks for canes. In February
of 1945 we arrived in Berlin under a devastaing Air Raid..Placed in complete
Solitary no food or water, before being sent to Barth Germany and Stalog Luft
1. I remember it was a large Camp and we were so sick and hungry. The tail
gunner and myself still together were placed in Compond North 1, Food being in
short supply we existed on what was given us! I remember our living newspaper
that was a real moral booster. I remember the wonderful pep talks by Col Zemke
and our liberation by the Russians! Why we were detained by the Russians after
our liberation is still a mystery
. I remember eventualy flying out in B-17's and getting lost over France..Landing
at a semi deserted fighter field and sleeping in a haystack. Were you on that
airplane of Rag Tag POW's?

I Just wanted to give an update. It has been a year and a half since I found this wonderful website. Since then I have been contacted by a man from the Dutch Royal Air Force who is writing his third book about WWII. His latest book is about the 487th, which my father served in. It should be out in 2004. My father and I have given him a complete account of my father's last mission and what happened to him after he was shot down over France on May 11, 1944. He was a POW at Stalag Luft 1, in Barth, Germany until the liberation in May, 1945. He never received some of the medals that he so well deserved. After gathering all the proper documentation of his war record, I applied for his medals. That was seven months ago. So 58 years later he finally received his European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign with one bronze star and the WWII Lapel Button, Prisoner of War Medal (POW) and the WWII Victory Medal. This was a very proud day. They are being properly framed so they may be displayed with all his other WWII memorabilia. This was a long process, but well worth the wait. This would have never happened if it hadn't been for this wonderful website. So thank you Mary for all the helpful information.

My husband made a model of Jerry Johnson's plane "In the mood" for the museum and was lucky enough to meet him on a few occasions. Although Jerry Johnson has since passed away we do have video footage of him returning to where he was based. Hi Mary. We met in Barth September 2001.

Flying from Foggia, Italy with 2nd BG, 20th BS, 15th AF as tail gunner on B-17 6440 with Williams crew, shot down 22 March 1945 over Ruhland, Germany by Me262. Parachuted into Buckgen, captured and POW at Stalag Luft I. Our plane crashed onto house, 22 Schmogrower Str., Grossrashhen, burned, exploded killing 13+ German nationals and wounding several others. Williams (P) and 8 crew were KIA in the plane. At invitation of Peter Gajda of Guteborn,

Also you can go from the home page by first going to "POW STORIES'. Then find my name, Bruce Bockstanz. I submitted Chuck's account along with other material.

My Grandfather was in Stalag Luft IV. He has some amazing stories, one of the people who was in the same barrack as him actually went to school with his fiancee! I loved when he talked about Chirstmas of 1944. With the snow and the POWs singing christmas carols. Does anyone else who was in IV remember this story?
My grandfather was Captured on October 19th and was liberated May 2nd by the British.

Mr.Held
On the night of may1 at 11:30 pm we saw the guards take
their arms and searchlights out of the guardtowers and
leave the camp. Our ranking officers decided it was best
to remain in the camp. The soviets came in a few days
later but refused to allow us to contact the allies.
Some days later they told us to take whatever we had and line up at the gates.Fortunately Col.Hubert Zemke
refused to go along with their order which was to walk
us to Oddessa. On a few days in May ,The 13 for me b-17s flew in to take us out.Years later an article in the Wall Street Journal reported that possibly 20,000
pow,s were taken into the Soviet Union and abandoned.
WE WERE NOT LIBERATED BY THE SOVIETS!

My Dad was a tail gunner and his plane was shot down on it's first mission at the beginning of WWII. He spent the war in a German prison camp. My Mother told me his caterpillar pin with the ruby eyes was lost but I have his caterpillar without ruby eyes. I always thought this was a replacement. I have often wondered about the Calterpillar Club and decided to check the internet. I was surprised to find so much information.
It's nice to find some history on this. I've always wondered why it was called the Caterpillar club. My Dad didn't talk much about this time. What I was able to find out came from my Mother.
I have a picture of him with his gun and I also have his prisoner of war pictures. He was able to get these when the Germans surrendered to the American prisoners rather than become prisoners of the Russians.

Just reading the stories on your page of POW. My uncle was MIA 5/14/1944 fighting in Italy on the Gustave line. Wounded he was left on retreat, when the hill (69) was retaken he was not found dead or alive. Just searching sites incase he was taken a POW. If you use google you can just type in Cleaston A Patterson and his story is there on several site. Trying to find out if there were any men that were taken prisoner while fighting the battle of the Gustave line in May of 44. Last May I visited the battle area in Italy. Thank you for this site. Greetings from Paris,

I work at the U.S. Embassy and came across a letter of support by one Mr. Yves Carnot.

He enclosed a beautiful color postcard of the Black Swan with the words "Remember Dec. 31st and never forget. The Black Swan will be flying forever in our memory."

Intrigued at what the connection could be between this man and the Black Swan, I did a search on the "Black Swan" and was surprised to find his name on your site as none other than the grandson of the man whose barn the plane crashed into. The Deputy Chief of Mission's office made sure to call and thank him for his sentiments.

Thank you for being the heroes that you were. I am a fan of WWII history, especially the B-17. I was impressed by your courage before, but the first time I got really close to a B-17 at the air museum in Pima, AZ I was in awe at what you undertook in those planes!

Sincerely,

Douglas Wells

I would welcome any information regarding my Father's wartime experiences. My Mother never let him speak very much about them. I regret all the stories I wlll never hear now that he is gone. My Dad had a long, happy life after the war. He joined the Los Angeles Fire Department in 1946 and retired at the rank of Captain in 1976. He told me he loved that job, and never felt like he was going to work. He remained athletic throughout his life, especially loving the sun and the beach. Later he was an avid, if not very good(his words) golfer. He left this earth in 1998 at the age of 82. I still miss him very much.

My Uncle Fred was a prisoner of war, but would never speak about it, unfortunately after his death a little over a year ago we discovered a lot of his letters and many other papers in his attic. It all was stored up there and was a complete surprise to us. He was a bachelor, and the home he returned to was his mother and his and he lived there until his death. It is like the day he returned all of this was put in the attic and never touched or looked at again.
